Plumbers Putty
Plumbers putty is most commonly used to stop a drain from leaking in your kitchen or bathroom sink.
Plumbers Putty for Setting Toilets
Often when you set a toilet there might be some unevenness on the floor. Plumbers putty on a rocking toilet will help hold the toilet in place. My personal feeling is that you could use silicone or wobble wedges to stop the rocking toilet. This works much better then plumbers putty.
I often get the question "how do I use plumbers putty on a fiberglass sink?" I only use plumbers putty on porcelain (often called vitreous china), or stainless steel sinks; and steel or acrylic bathtubs and showers. Plumbers putty on a fibreglass sink will sometimes bleed into the sink. Therefore I like to only use silicone or a rubber gasket on the drains for a fibreglass sink.
Plumbers putty works good for holding faucets tighter, keeping toilet caps on toilet bolts, and as a gasket around your kitchen sink base.
Even though plumbers putty works well, in some areas other products work much better. Rubber gaskets or silicone both work great for sink, bathtub, and shower drains. And using both silicone and wobble wedges to stop a rocking toilet work fantastic. Now, having said this I still go through at least one small container of plumbers putty every six weeks or so.
I hope you enjoyed my article on plumbers putty.
