Plumbers Tape

Plumbers tape is used to lubricate the threads of pipe, but will also act as a sealant. There are a few different types of plumbers tape on the market today. Some different colors are yellow, pink, white, or orange. Generally the yellow plumbers tape is for gas fitting and the white is for everything else. The pink and orange have different ratings, some for gas and some are not, so check on the side of the holder for the specific rating.

Plumbers tape is made from teflon, therefore you might also hear the term teflon tape used in place of plumbers tape.

How To Use Plumbers Pipe Thread Tape

Stay off of the thread about one thread into the pipe from the end. With the pipe in your left hand wrap the plumbers pipe thread tape around the thread with your right hand. First over and away from you, then under and towards you.

In gas fitting do the threads need plumbers tape?

I get this question a lot, and there is no mandatory place that plumbers tape must be used. You can use pipe dope instead, but generally tape works better. I have worked with companies that use plumbers tape and use plumbers pipe thread compound or dope at the same time. Plumbers will use this on both gas lines and hot water heating lines, to ensure a tighter joint therefore having less leaks within the system.

Plumbers tape can be found in almost any of your local hardware stores. A word of caution, only qualified plumbers and gas fitters should be working on your plumbing and gas systems.
