Shower Enclosures
Shower enclosures come in different styles and sizes. The most common shower enclosure I have ever installed is a neo angle shower. Even these come in different sizes, ranging from 32 inches to 36 inches. The nice thing about a neoangle shower enclosure is that in a basement where you do not have a ton of room you can easily install one and have a decent sized shower stall. This type of shower enclosure can be installed with shower tile along with the shower base or shower pan that comes with it, or instead of shower tile you can use the shower surround that comes with it. Where I am from the shower plumbing will cost you about $900, including installing a shower faucet with a shower head.
Another type of shower enclosure that is common on the market is the round shower. These also come in a few different sizes, and are easy to install, but not as easy as the neo angle shower. These also come with a shower surround, glass walls and door, and a shower base or shower pan. I have done the shower plumbing for some people that have not used the shower pan, shower base, or the surround, but instead used shower tile throughout. In my opinion these look much better, but might be a little tougher to keep clean.
Other shower enclosures are square or rectangular. If you want you can make your own shower enclosure as well. Most people use this term when you do not need to use a shower curtain. The enclosure is normally made from glass, and depending on the purpose of the shower there is a space before the ceiling. If you are using a combination shower and steam bath then your enclosure must go to the ceiling. Steam shower enclosures come in a couple of different forms. The shower that is one unit that you build from the manufacturer and then there is the shower that you build with shower tile and glass, and install a steam unit and benches to sit on. These are starting to get pretty pricy, but if you are going to use one all the time then very much worth the money.
If you are going to build your own shower enclosure make sure you use the proper drywall for the type of shower tile you are going to install. If you are into diy tiles, then use cement board on the walls for your floor type tiles, if you are using regular wall tiles then you can use dense shield or aqua board for your drywall. On your floor if you are not going to use a shower base then use a shower liner to keep the water from penetrating through the cement out to the bathroom or surrounding areas.
The most common shower repair I have had to make on a shower enclosure is pulling out silicone and putting in new silicone. The reason this happens is if the silicone was not given enough time set prior to use. Once water gets back there then the silicone will fail in a short period of time.
