Shower Head
Shower head, shower heads everywhere. Where to begin. I have been a plumber for the last 19 years and one of the areas we specialize in is low flow fixtures. Years ago you could buy a low flow shower head that would only dribble out of the head giving you next to nothing for pressure. I even remember going to trade shows and companies were handing out these little devices you would put into your shower head to reduce the flow. Trouble is that those shower heads were not built for less flow. The engineering involved required a certain volume of water to be flowing through the device to work properly. The same is true for low flow toilets. The newer shower heads are able to give you a great shower without compromising any luxury.
Elegant shower heads
There is a number of shower heads on the market today. Pretty much everything you can imagine. From body sprays, to rain drop shower heads. I once installed in one shower a regular shower head, a shower head with hose attachment, and 6 body sprays. The funny part is this shower was installed in the basement of the house. Normally these showers are not used very often. The shower faucet they installed was a hansgrohe. Very expensive, but top of the line. The shower tile was a 12 x 12 tile that went around the complete shower enclosure. The shower drain was a 2 inch to be able to accommodate the flow of all the shower heads. A standard shower drain would only be 1 ½ inches. The shower base was also a shower tile, except instead of 12 x 12 inch tiles the tiles were 1 x 1 inch. These shower tiles were placed on top of a shower liner. There are a couple of shower liners on the market, either PVC or CPE liners will work. The shower plumbing price was about $800 just for the labour. Sounds high, but compared to the $2000 in shower heads and faucets the price is not bad.
Shower massage heads
The most common low flow shower head I sell and install has a return on investment of just 3 months. And has a pulsating shower head. The pulsating part works well, not really my thing, but I have used it at least a couple of dozens times in the last few years. I have tried many other shower massage heads and feel this one works the best.
The nice thing about shower heads is you can change out the head without having to change the shower arm, making this an easy shower repair. If you do have to change the shower arm though that is easy to do. Just make sure you put some plumbers tape on the threads. Most shower heads can be picked up from your local hardware store.
Good luck with your new shower head.
