Shower Repair
Shower repair jobs are much more difficult then other plumbing repair jobs.
Shower repair on a shower faucet can involve changing the faucet guts, or the handle or the shower head. Any of these are fairly easy but time consuming since there are dozens of different types out there you will need to take out the parts and go to a plumbing wholesaler for new parts.
Most shower repair jobs for shower enclosures are jobs requiring new silicone or new grout. If you have a leak then call your local plumber, he/she should be able to troubleshoot the problem, but may not be able to fix it. If your shower surround is leaking you will need a new one. This can be a huge job. Same goes for a leaking shower liner. These are below your shower tile on the floor and if you have a leak there you will have a lot of work to repair it. I once went into a house for a shower plumbing repair job. The shower was on the second floor and leaking through to the main floor. I did a few steps to determine the problem. I cut a hole in the ceiling to determine what was leaking, the drywall was already damaged anyway.
First since the leak was not constant I know that the pressure lines are fine. Next I took off the shower head and put a cap on the shower arm and turned on the water. No leak, this means that the pipe from the shower faucet to the head was not faulty. The next step was to take a pail of water and pour it down the shower drain. Still nothing. At this point I know the problem is not plumbing related, but I was not going to stop there. There was no shower pan or shower base, instead there was floor tile on a shower liner. The next step was to put my plunger over the shower drain and turn on the faucet. I let the water fill up to the curb of the shower before turning off the faucet. At this point the homeowner said that water was coming through the ceiling. Now I knew there was a leak in the shower liner. If there was no leak here I would have gone onto the last step. And that is to take a pail of water and a pour water on the shower tile in the shower enclosure. Sometimes you will find there is a leak in the grout in the walls. If there is and you can diy tiles you might want to re-grout the tiles yourself. If there is a shower surround instead of tile then I only pour the water over the base and the shower faucet. I still have found leaks in this manner on shower surrounds.
